When Gay Rights and Religious Liberties Clash by Barbara Bradley Hagerty NPR.org, June 13, 2008 · In recent years, some states have passed laws giving residents the right to same-sex unions in various forms. Gay couples may marry in Massachusetts and California. There are civil unions and domestic partnerships in Vermont, New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Oregon. Other states give more limited rights. Armed with those legal protections, same-sex couples are beginning to challenge policies of religious organizations that exclude them, claiming that a religious group's view that homosexual marriage is a sin cannot be used to violate their right to equal treatment. Now parochial schools, "parachurch" organizations such as Catholic Charities and businesses that refuse to serve gay couples are being sued — and so far, the religious groups are losing. Here are a few cases: Adoption services: Catholic Charities in Massachusetts refused to place children with same-sex couples as required by Massachusetts law. After a legislative struggle — during which the Senate president said he could not support a bill "condoning discrimination" — Catholic Charities pulled out of the adoption business in 2006. Housing: In New York City, Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a school under Orthodox Jewish auspices, banned same-sex couples from its married dormitory. New York does not recognize same-sex marriage, but in 2001, the state's highest court ruled Yeshiva violated New York City's ban on sexual orientation discrimination. Yeshiva now allows all couples in the dorm. Parochial schools: California Lutheran High School, a Protestant school in Wildomar, holds that homosexuality is a sin. After the school suspended two girls who were allegedly in a lesbian relationship, the girls' parents sued, saying the school was violating the state's civil rights act protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination. The case is before a state judge. Medical services: A Christian gynecologist at North Coast Women's Care Medical Group in Vista, Calif., refused to give his patient in vitro fertilization treatment because she is in a lesbian relationship, and he claimed that doing so would violate his religious beliefs. (The doctor referred the patient to his partner, who agreed to do the treatment.) The woman sued under the state's civil rights act. The California Supreme Court heard oral arguments in May 2008, and legal experts believe that the woman's right to medical treatment will trump the doctor's religious beliefs. One justice suggested that the doctors take up a different line of business. Psychological services: A mental health counselor at North Mississippi Health Services refused therapy for a woman who wanted help in improving her lesbian relationship. The counselor said doing so would violate her religious beliefs. The counselor was fired. In March 2001, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit sided with the employer, ruling that the employee's religious beliefs could not be accommodated without causing undue hardship to the company. Civil servants: A clerk in Vermont refused to perform a civil union ceremony after the state legalized them. In 2001, in a decision that side-stepped the religious liberties issue, the Vermont Supreme Court ruled that he did not need to perform the ceremony because there were other civil servants who would. However, the court did indicate that religious beliefs do not allow employees to discriminate against same-sex couples. Adoption services: A same-sex couple in California applied to Adoption Profiles, an Internet service in Arizona that matches adoptive parents with newborns. The couple's application was denied based on the religious beliefs of the company's owners. The couple sued in federal district court in San Francisco. The two sides settled after the adoption company said it will no longer do business in California. Wedding services: A same sex couple in Albuquerque asked a photographer, Elaine Huguenin, to shoot their commitment ceremony. The photographer declined, saying her Christian beliefs prevented her from sanctioning same-sex unions. The couple sued, and the New Mexico Human Rights Commission found the photographer guilty of discrimination. It ordered her to pay the lesbian couple's legal fees ($6,600). The photographer is appealing. Wedding facilities: Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association of New Jersey, a Methodist organization, refused to rent its boardwalk pavilion to a lesbian couple for their civil union ceremony. The couple filed a complaint with the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights. The division ruled that the boardwalk property was open for public use, therefore the Methodist group could not discriminate against gay couples using it. In the interim, the state's Department of Environmental Protection revoked a portion of the association's tax benefits. The case is ongoing. Does anyone know of a florist, photographer, and/or videographer in Southern california that is in the Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley/Inland Empire area that is good but inexpensive at the same time. I am getting married next summer and don't know where to start looking. Thanks for all your help! moreResolved Question: Do you expect your wedding photographer to drive to your city for a consultation?
I am a photographer in the San Diego area. A lot of my clients live in downtown San Diego, which is 30-40 minutes away from my office. Do you think customers are less likely to meet with me since I am 30 minutes away? Do you think I would get more business if *I* drove 30 minutes and met with the customer at their home, business or local coffee shop within their own city? I don't want someone to pass me up because my office is not "local". What do you think? moreResolved Question: Wedding in san jose?
I want my wedding in San Jose. I'm not from there, but I have family who live there and we have to have the wedding there because certain relatives can't travel. Is it possible to have a nice wedding for 100 people at a hotel - ceremony and reception for $20,000 (total costs - room rental, food, photographer, flowers, favors, but NOT including honeymoon, hotel rooms for guests, airfare, rings, etc.). If so, I need recommendations. Thanks! moreResolved Question: How can I get some help paying for my wedding? A Sponser?
I am a disabled woman who finally found the man of my dreams. I don't have any finances to have a wedding, and my family has not really responded to my requests for help. I have heard of sponserships? what are they? How can I apply for one? Also, I don't want a crazy wedding! Just about 75 people, in my hometown, no photographer(unless they want to sponcer), no planner. If I had the money, just about 2,000 dollars would work+the cost of a small honeymoon to San Francisco. We are on a fixed income (Social Security and small wages about 1000 dollars a month) We have bad credit and don't want to put ourselves further in debt with a loan. Any ideas? Thanks! Someone asked what difference it makes if I am disabled, The reason I stated that was so people would understand that I am on Social Security, so we don't have a lot of money. Also, I do not want a huge wedding. Just a decent sized one. Its not like I am asking for a 10,000 dollar wedding, people! I didn't know people on here could be so damn rude! I was just asking any ideas to get some money for my wedding. I have a friend of mine that got married at the courthouse and that was it and she is still VERY UNHAPPY about it 10 years later. I am not asking for a lavish wedding, just some ideas on how to save some money on my wedding or earn some money or come up with some money. RUDE! (not all of you, but some of you!) Some one said they were allarmed at my edits. I think its rude because I didn't even know what a sponcership was. I was only asking. Then instead of just telling me what one was, people said I was being tacky even asking for one or asking my family and friends to help me out. I personally think its tackey to get a sponcership now that I know what one is, but I thought the way people personally attacked my question was rediculious. I was asking for ways to save on my wedding. Thank you to people who accually answered my question without judgement. moreResolved Question: Where can I find an affordable wedding photographer in san antonio?
I've looked at some websites for photographers but all their prices are outrageous like 1,000 to 2,000 dollars. Or would it be better to just have cameras at the tables for my guests to take pictures and have a note saying to take pictures of our day and leave at table? Would that be cheaper? I know it's memories and all but I don't have that much money left after everything else that's important. moreResolved Question: Photographers ins San Francisco area?
Does anyone know of any good photographers in the San Francisco area? And around how much should we spend on a photographer? We are having a really small wedding, we're bringing our family to city hall and then going to the beach and eating at a beach restaurant, so pretty much all we're spending money on is the rings, clothes, and pictures. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Locations in San Francisco for good wedding photos?

I live in San Francisco and work in a bridal shop. Most guests speak Chinese or English. I take wedding and engagement pictures. People like my works a lot, but they never think of giving me tips. I am looking for something outdoors for a wedding in may or june. My budget for everything is $5000 that means dress, food, location, photographer...etc. I don't really want a beach wedding, more of a garden, park like setting. I love rustic barns, country style weddings, very simple, cheap :) moreResolved Question: What can you recommend for a private San Juan wedding?
My fiance and I are going on a week-long honeymoon cruise that leaves San Juan, Puerto Rico docks at 10pm on March 2nd of 2008. We would like to get off our plane, go to a private area and have a brief wedding ceremony, eat a nice dinner in San Juan in our wedding garb, and get on the boat (still in our wedding garb). We want to keep this is simple as possible- NO fancy decorations, NO big wedding cakes- I'm even bringing my own boquet. I've been combing the internet for weeks and keep coming across the same issue- people wanting 1000+ just to coordinate- this doesn't include cost of beach reservation, officiant, and license arrangement. I'm so frustrated I can hardly stand it. We just want 30 mins- in and out- no muss no fuss. I can arrange my own photographer, my meals, etc. A question for PR locals- is it cheaper, do you think to start searching outside of San Juan? Can you recommend places? I would sincerely appreciate all info you can provide. moreResolved Question: Would you attend a bridal and home fair in Austin or San Antonio entitled "My Daddy's Not A Millionaire?
My daughter and I produce Wedding and Home fairs. We lived in Austin previously and loved it. Two sons live there. We are planning to move back within a few months. We are planning to produce a fair in Austin and in San Antonio which is simply described in our title. We believe that the current fairs in the area are wonderful but do not give exposure to SMALL vendors and Brides, Grooms, and people planning to do new things to their homes (furniture, remodeling on a Budget). Our fairs are staged for people who do not have an unlimited bank account - who do not buy wedding gowns that cost multi thousands of $ and cannot afford photographers in the 5 figures, etc. Also for newly married couples, anniversary couples, people looking for a new home, new decor, new towels, all kinds of unique designed things. We are curious what Austin and San Antonio residents would think of this idea - would you like to attend? Know a "place" to recommend that would hold a large crowd? moreResolved Question: Affordable Photographers, Videographers, & Disk Jockey in San Diego?
