Open Question: My friend has fractured her knee?

My friend used to play basketball all the time. As time went on her knee began to give her trouble. From what I've heard, she went to the hospital and they were treating her knee until she switched insurance and you know the rest. They cut her off because of her insurance. She plans to move to North Carolina ( she's in South Carolina now ) and she heard the doctors are better over there even with her type of insurance. she lives in a small town so doctors are limited. That is a month from now, and she's in pain. I can't do anything because I'm states away, but is there anything she can do to sooth her knee? She has tried pain killers, ice, and relaxation techniques. What's left to do to help her? She says it feels like someone is driving a screw driver into her knee. Help!  more

Resolved Question: Insomnia I really need some help?!?

I'm 15 years old, and I have so much trouble with sleep, it takes me hours on end to get to sleep in the first place (for example, I got to bed tonight at around 10:30pm and it is now 1:10 am - I gave up trying and have come to find help as I am now wide awake), and then I will either keep waking up during the night, or I will wake up stupidly early (5am ish) and not be able to fall back asleep. This had been going on for around 7 months. I've been to the doctors twice about this: the first time I was given a 'self help' booklet with tips, and I can honestly say I have tried everything! From only using my bed for sleeping to getting up, relaxation techniques before bed and walking about if I can not sleep, nothing has worked for me. The second time I went to the doctors for this problem, I was not given much help at all, I was told to drink coffee when I got home from school to try and push my tiredness closer to bedtime rather than late afternoon. I tried this and yet again, no improvement, I have even tried herbal sleeping tablets, and these have been competely useless! Are there any suggestions, I really don't know what I should do. If I went back to the doctors and asked for sleeping tablets -which I can assure you I am only suggesting because I have nothing else I can do- would they prescribe me them?  more

Resolved Question: Why do the relaxation techniques make me feel worse?

I have been given a CD by a psychotherapist to use to try and reduce my anxiety and make me relax. He says to practise them everyday. So far they have increased my anxiety and made me feel awful. The first track on there gets you to picture a safe place - I have a problem with this as I don't feel safe anywhere at the moment. I tried it again and I ended up nearly in tears with frustration and it brought back loads of grief for my partner. The second track is muscle relaxation - it starts off with getting you to concentrate on your breathing. Whenever I do this my breathing gets worse and I start to feel anxious and panicky. How do I overcome this? Will keep trying make it work? Am I doing something wrong? I am in such a bad place mentally right now and I just don't know what to do to make things feel better. My anxiety is on overload and I just feel so distressed. Do you have problems with relaxation techniques? What works for you? I suffer from PTSD - complex trauma; Chronic grief; Chronic Depression; anhedonia and anxiety. Sorry for being so silly and thanks for any helpful suggestions you can give. :-)))  more

Resolved Question: How would you handle this?

My husband and I are recently separated. He is abusive emotionally and verbally to both me and the children (3 teens). He is particularly tough on our son (17). This morning, our son has his AP test for World History. Yesterday was AP English test. He can be edgey when he is feeling stress (can't we all?) and we are working on relaxation techniques. I had the kids for 4 days while ex was out of town - he chose to not come home and see the kids the last night even though he was in town. All was quiet and fine while he was gone, and our son got off to the first AP test with no problem. Ex had the kids last night. I got a call from our son this morning saying he would never be alone with his father again. He was very, very agitated, and apparently his father had refused to allow him to get on the bus. Instead he drove him to school and yelled at him the entire time, threatening to physically push him out of the car while it was moving (which fortunately dad is no longer strong enough to do to a 17 year old). According to our daughter, the son was being a jerk to his dad. OK, but is the time to deal with that when the kid is about to take his AP test? I mean, yeah, correct him and let him know there will be consequences, but to scream at the kid for 25 minutes, threaten him, and then dump him at the test site 1 hour early in the rain?? I got a call from my husband saying, "This situation is not working out. We need to talk and you need to do something about it." We are meeting for lunch. I'm not sure how to act. I am so sick of the kids calling me and telling me how awful it is when dad is with them. I want to keep them from him. I KNEW I should not have allowed him to stay with the kids last night!! How do I keep my cool with this @sshole? BTW, the kids are seeing a counselor. Dad refuses to go. The marriage is over. I won't tolerate the abuse any longer, so no need to tell me to get marriage counseling.  more

Resolved Question: What religion should I follow?

I may just may... leave the religion of christianity and decide upon buduh, celtic, hindu, ect. those are the three main ones ive been thinking about. The two main reasons i quit christianiy is because its so popular and you see it every were i mean EVERY were that its boring and old. Another reason is because I want to learn the sacred martial art of controlling chi, useing chi to heal, useing energy, meditateing, and learning about multiple gods and chakra. And in the bible that stuff is phrobited.... oir is it? is useing energy too heal not allowed in christianity? what about useing chi techniques to defend yourself and relaxation. If it is against the bible then bingo, im changeing it, and not to be rude but i would like to ask you christians out there not to encourage me to change my mind and follow the same old religion, if you do i will ignore you and its a free country so please stop it. any way,.... the religions ive mostly been thinking about are buduh, hindu. Buduh and hindu because it has to do alot with what i was talking about. And celtic because its cool and intresting, plus i love nature, plants, and would love to become a druid. which religion is most real and which should i pick?  more

Resolved Question: Can't stop worrying...?

I'm not sure why, but I keep worrying about swine flu, I may get over it for a bit, then I'll start worrying again, usually at night time, this is making life quite miserable. I KNOW that this isn't something to worry about, I know the facts about it. Only deaths are people in Mexico, a baby in the US with health problems who came from Mexico, and a woman with health problems. I've read about a school who had a ton of people infected, the school was closed, and the infected people came back to school... A man was hospitalised with it, and then released the next day. I know that flu is a very "self-limiting" illness. I know that there's treatment, and you won't die unless you don't get help. I know that things will be fine, that the media is just blowing this out of proportion, they are basically "feeding" on people's fear, in the swine flu coverage articles, one of the newer one's is about bird flu and swine flu merging, why would they put that there? It doesn't help, it just scares people further. And yet I still worry, I've rationalised everything and yet I can't stop, I've tried relaxation techniques and stuff, which I'm skeptical about, and still because they don't work. Every time I get over something... There seems to be something new that happens to create anxiety... A few weeks ago it was about me having to leave Singapore for good... Please, can somebody help me get over this. Do you think it's wise to keep up to date on the news on this? Some of news just add to the fear, some alleviate it, but I don't know if the worry is worth the risk of potentially finding good news. I wish I hadn't found out about this in the first place, knowledge is a burden, but then again it can keep you safe...  more

Resolved Question: What are the focus areas for the AP World History exam?

So something I've noticed with AP World History is that certain regions and time periods are always grouped with certain questions about a particular theme. For instance, before colonization, India is usually grouped with some cultural aspect. This usually includes Buddhism, Hinduism, or the social aspects of the caste system. As another example, the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty (I think; not sure) are always grouped together. Then you have to find the political, social, economic, and cultural differences between the two. Are there any other time/regions that are associated with a theme (usually geographic, social, cultural, political, and economic)? Is my observation inaccurate? Another thing I've noticed is many questions center on the Han Dynasty, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire, and revolutions (like South American, African, and Russian Revolutions). Are there any other particular regions/time periods that are of importance? And lastly, I'm sososo nervous for my exam. Any relaxation techniques? xD;  more

Voting Question: STRESSED OUT TO THE MAX! I NEED HELP PLEASE!?

Ever since the accident, I haven't been the same. (background Information on the accident:On my birthday, i got into a car accident. I went into the medium on the highway and hurt the front end of my bummer, cracked the windshield, and threw the alignment off and that's it. I came so close to loosing my life along with my fiance's life. When I got out of the car, I was so worried about the car and how my grandmother (the person i live with and her car) was going to kill me. When we got home, my grandmother and my dad did just that. They didn't believe me and my fiancee (boyfriend to them) that I really just got into a car accident and they thought me and him went off roading at the beach.) everyone has noticed this, and I have too. Especially my fiancee. He says he doesn't love me any less, and wants us to go back to the way it was in our early relationship and add some new things to it. Im am game, but as i said before...my grandmother is a monster! Another things is, I have to put up with her BS 24/7. AHH it is so annoying! She constantly calls me fat, tells me how to live my life (along with my aunt), tells me that my bf (fiancee)will never amount to anything, constantwhinesins and b****es about everything! When I say im out with friends and ill be home later i dont know when, SHE FLIPS OUT AND SAYS IN SNEAKY! WHAT?!?!?! AGH! i could go on and on about her and write the length of the China Wall with things I hate about her, but there are other things that are worrying me at this moment. School, grades (they have been slipping), working at my TWO jobs, friends, pimples (they are like everywhere on my face), PROM (OH THATS A BIG ONE, ITS MAY 15, AND I ONLY HAVE A DRESS AND A DATE no shoes, no limo, no hair appt. no nail appt, no nada...AHHH), school play tryouts (had them today), my boyfriend, worrying if im pregnant or not (long story! and yes i took a test but it was negative but i still feel like i am), worrying about my sister (she lives with her mother and her other sister who SHE [my sister] hates), being forced to worry about my dad (family is using the guilt trip thing cuz my dad lost his job and just lost his house), the talent show this friday (im dancing in it, and i still have to make up like 3 8 counts ahh), my dance crew, my theater class/company and soooooooo much more. So as you my life is extremely stressful, and I just need a break....anyone out there have any relaxation tips or techniques i could use? Resolved Question: don't worry about the swine flu?

the news is just making a biger deal then it is, there only been 335 case and 17 died it may seem alot but look you can live on it if you stay clean and wash your hands and take care of yourimmune system and how do you take care of your immune system is by Exercise. Regular, gentle exercise, like walking, helps fortify your immune system by stimulating natural killer cells that stop viruses and bacteria. Exercise is especially helpful for seniors. Women over 67 who walk or exercise regularly reportedly have fewer respiratory infections than others. Get enough sleep. Your body needs rest to stay in tip-top shape. When it's working to fight off a cold or the flu, sometimes rest is the best medicine. Relax. Find ways to reduce stress, which can weaken your immune system. Listen to music, do yoga or tai chi, go for a walk, practice deep breathing exercises or other relaxation techniques, or just talk to someone about your problems. Wash your hands. It's an easy and effective way to fight germs. When Naval recruits lathered up five times a day, they watched their rate of respiratory illness drop by 45 percent. Wash vigorously with regular soap and water for 15 to 20 seconds. When you eat right and take care of your body, your immune system will take care of you. that how the only thing you need to worry about is that if your old or young but if you do get the FLU just do what i told you. IT NOT THAT BAD AS THEY SAY RIGHT NOW IT WE JUST HAVE TO SEE HOW BIG IT GET BUT RIGHT NOW EVERONE GOING NUT JUST WAIT A MOUTH.last thing think about what happen to sars where is it now and this thing not as to sars well not but my point is they making such a big deal  more

Whenever I'm in a large group working on a project, speaking, at an assembly or even playing cards, I get overtaken in sweat, and in turn, nerves. No deoderant or relaxation techniques can stop this. Sometimes it will be minimal or none while others it can be pretty bad. its not noticeable so far but it gets worst under my arms and sadly, on my butt when im sitting. With prom and grad coming up, i need to find a way to deal with this issue.  more

Resolved Question: How do people actually do visualization relaxation techniques..is this normal?

Someone suggested one time to use some visualizations to relax me and help me get to sleep. So I have been trying this with various things like the ocean or in the woods. I start to imagine I am on a beach. I have the picture perfectly visualized in my mind of the sand, water and sunset then all of a sudden out of the blue an image appears in the scene that is totally out of place. Like a dragon pops out of the sand or a naked man runs across the beach screaming and flailing his arms. Anyway that is just one example of the many times I have tried to use some visualization techniques to relax me. Is this how it normally goes...crap just pops in your head at random or am I doing something wrong?  more

Resolved Question: Why would my beautiful fiancee lie to me about buying a Frisbee?

My beautiful and emotionally stable fiancée Megan (Mee-Gun, NOT May-Gun) is an absolute treasure in a world lacking class and dignity. In 1989, she won the Roosevelt Elementary spelling bee. This qualified her for regions, and she would have won if not for the presence of a young lady from India that used unfair studying techniques not yet known to the United States. In fact, to this day, if I have a question on a crossword puzzle, I ask Megan to spell if correctly for me. If she cannot immediately spell it, she will quickly use her computer to look up the correct spelling. You cannot buy that kind of integrity. I digress. This past weekend, we headed to a local beach community for a little weekend rest and relaxation. The last day there, I went over to a local convenience store to grab her a diet soda and ice cream. When I was crossing the street towards the beach to giver her the treats, I saw her playing with a Frisbee. She told me that she found it, but I do know that there is a store on the beach that happens to sell the very type of Frisbee that I found her with. Why was she playing Frisbee? Did she really find the Frisbee on the beach, or did she actually purchase the Frisbee? Sometimes I feel like I don't really even know her. ((((JACK)))) Haven't seen you in a while! :) LOL. It was you!!!! That's awesome! :)  more

Resolved Question: question for those who know meditation, hypnosis or relaxation techniques?

Anyone know what could cause this, its on sometimes but its just a powerful urge to tense up or swtich positions....hard to explain.  more
