Open Question: English or western? Advice please.?

To start things off, this is not a question regarding which of these is "better", but a question asking for advice. I started riding at the age of five, learning the western discipline. It was fun and all, but part of me ached to try English. I continued with Western until I turned ten and my family decided to move to a new city. We sold our horses and moved on. Ever since we moved, I tried to find new riding stables. The thing was... The place we moved to was a very wealthy area, and the choices for western stables were limited. Due to that, I decided to take up Show Jumping. I mastered the basics and finally became comfortable with jumping up to three-foot obstacles. After a while, at my current age of thirteen, the trainer I became so fond of kicked me out of her program because I always had to rely on her lesson horses. My family was not able, and still isn't able, to buy an English Show Jumper with the "experience I needed", as my trainer would say. She'd claim any horse under fifteen grand doesn't have the experience I require. (In my opinion, that is very untrue.) Because I didn't buy a horse in the time period she could handle, she sent me away. At this point, I've experienced both Western and English, and I understand that both are challenging yet rewarding. English is a bit on the expensive side, which I/My parents can hardly afford just lessons, and Western is financially easier. Because of that, if I took up Western again, my parents would be able to pay for boarding for a horse. The question I'm trying to ask myself is: Is the horse more important than the style of riding? And quite frankly, my mind is telling me yes. So, in conclusion, I have several questions to ask: -Should I continue with English riding although it is almost unaffordable, or should I switch back to Western? -If I was to switch back to Western, what disciplines (Reining, Cutting, Barrels, Etc.) are as exciting as Show Jumping? I'm always craving high adrenaline and a moderate risk factor. -In your opinion, which is more important? Owning your own horse, or riding in a certain discipline? Answer 5: I CAN afford English lessons. I CAN afford occasional shows. and I CAN afford an English horse. But at this moment, and in this economy, I CHOOSE not to use my money on horses. Most of my money goes to charity. I'd rather those people eat, than I have my pleasures.  more

Voting Question: Should dress code have me on edge with new teaching opportunity?

I have an excellent opportunity as part of earning my Masters degree in teaching to student-teach at an inner-city Catholic school for disadvantaged children next academic year. It's this type of opportunity that motivates me to want to teach -- to feel like I'm helping kids who really need it. It’s the type of opportunity that I prayed to get during my academic studies while pursuing my degree in education. The thing that is really bothering me, even though I have already agreed to do it in my initial excitement about getting this offer, is they require student-intern teachers to wear a uniform very similar to the students, and it weirded me out when I went to the uniform store and actually tried on the school's plaid. It's an honest-to-God real school uniform with very little options. There are essentially two options for the girls, and for me as a consequence of my gender, (1) a bright red/navy plaid jumper dress, or (2) a polyester red/navy plaid skort (with hidden shorts underneath). Both with a white button-down uniform blouse. Originally, I was thinking I would get by wearing the skort with navy tights, but learned at the store that girls can only wear the tights from mid-November to the end of February, and that from the beginning of school in August until mid-November, and also from March through June, they have to wear nylon knee-high socks. Normally, the only time I’ve worn knee-highs are under pants; and trying them on with the skort and jumper made me look clownish. Also, what I realized about the skort is that it is cut a little above the knee to begin with since there are modesty shorts sewn in underneath. However, I'm 5’ 9” and a little thick around the hips, butt, and thighs, so when I sit those inner shorts tug the skort up my thighs a few extra inches, and without tights this will make me self-conscious about my appearance in front of the students and male faculty/staff. It's not that it looks too short; it's just that I have thick legs which make their appearance when I sit or bend. I originally asked them about wearing navy or khaki uniform pants, but they assured me that wearing the uniform as a student-intern teacher will be fine once I get used to it, and help me integrate. I'm conflicted about my feelings. This is an excellent opportunity to help inner-city children and launch my teaching career with good experience during this final phase of obtaining my Masters degree, but wearing this uniform makes me extremely self conscious because of its juvenile style. Any advice, approaches?  more

Voting Question: Hunter/Jumper Lessons in Kansas/Missouri?

Hi, I'm a high school graduate looking to go to K-State in the fall, and I'm really interested in the Equestrian team. I've had ten years of riding experience, but had to sell my two horses last year because of the economy, and i've been off riding for a year. Now i'm looking for a competitive trainer for the summer to get me in shape and tune-up my riding before august. Because I don't own horses anymore, they'll need to have a decent lesson horse program, and as i'm not a beginner, i'd need a trainer who could school me over 3'-3'6" courses. I'm willing to drive a max of an hour, I live in Kansas city, MO. For those of us horse kids that live in the area, where do you ride/with who? THANKS!!  more

Resolved Question: Why am I feeling the cold temperatures more than before?

I've noticed specifically in the last two years that I have become more sensitive to cold weather. My parents would always be amazed at my ability to wear shorts and t-shirts in the middle of winter. I used to be in okay in a long sleeved shirt and tunic (school) in winter but now I wear my school uniform with a woolen vest, jumper AND blazer and I still freeze (+ stockings, skirt and long sleeved shirt). Why am I more sensitive to the cold??? I live in Sydney in the city so it's very rarely if never under 10 C so it's not even freezing temperature. It's just a lot of people were complaining they were hot (today) and weren't wearing nearly as much of the warmer optional parts of the school uniform than I was and it concerns me how much more I feel the cold. so why am I so cold when I'm wearing heaps =(  more

Resolved Question: Is it true that you need to know Spanish in order to live in Texas?

Like in Texas cities such as Laredo, Brownsville, El Paso, Presidio, Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Rio Grande City, and so on? LOL! I speak Spanish, but that's because I spend a lot of time vacationing in SPAIN, a developed and beautiful EUROPEAN nation - not because I need to talk to a bunch of border jumpers. Why did Texas let this happen? What went wrong? Why does Texas allow itself to be "messed with?" Or, perhaps I should ask, ¿Por qué Tejas se metió en este lío? I'm sure Texans will understand what that means.  more

Resolved Question: Is this moral Cartels use kids to breach U.S. border?

Drug cartel members are using a variety of fronts and subterfuges - from fake tamale stands to child decoys - to gather intelligence about enhanced U.S. border security and exploit weaknesses to send in people and drugs, according to a new report obtained by The Washington Times. The findings, by the U.S. Army's Asymmetric Warfare Group, underline the growing threat to U.S. security from a porous border. Mexican drug cartels continue to probe for gaps in border defenses while fighting one another and Mexican authorities in a violent conflict that has killed more than 7,000 people in Mexico since the beginning of 2008. U.S. authorities also worry that terrorist groups could exploit vulnerabilities in border security. According to a report earlier this month by the warfare group about the San Diego-Tijuana border area, the cartels are finding novel ways to move contraband and people into the U.S., including wedging children into gaps in the cement pylons at border barriers. "The smuggling facilitator or families of the illegal migrants will use children to lodge them in the gaps of the cement pylons, at which point a U.S. fire department is called in to free the child," the report said. "This tactic relies on the U.S. first responders' initiative to rescue or save a human life and subsequently creates a physical gap - which generally takes two weeks to repair - to use for border breaching." The cartels also use torches in backpacks to cut through fences and tamale stands and personal watercraft for surveillance, the report said. They ship drugs through sewers and may be planning to send them into the U.S. on the backs of men parachuting out of planes. Cartels already have used hang gliders and other ultralight aircraft to move narcotics into the U.S. These craft can carry about 200 pounds of drugs. The report suggested that the cartels were looking to upgrade the technique by using newer equipment, allowing them to bring in bigger loads. "Civilian or military trained tandem jumpers could deliver a payload of 750 pounds, while the delivery aircraft would be able to avoid United States airspace," the report said. "The jumpers would be able to land successfully at desired locations using off the shelf GPS and equipment, and at locations previously inaccessible to ultra-light aircraft. This tactic also will permit multiple jumpers to converge on a location increasing payload delivery." http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/may/28/crafty-cartels-test-vulnerable-us-border/ Now before all the supporters of illegals start laughing they just better understand Drug addiction soars in Mexico.AGUA PRIETA, Mexico — Carlos Antonio López started using crack at age 11 to kill the pain of his mother's death. "I started with marijuana, but after a while it didn't fill me up anymore," he says. "Then I started on crack. You get obsessed, you can't think about anything else." Now 18, López is in his sixth stint in rehab. Not so long ago, stories like López's were unusual in Mexico, where drug addiction had never been a widespread problem. These days, the country is dealing with an unprecedented epidemic of drug use that is partly a result of better U.S. border enforcement, experts say. The new border fence and intensified patrols by both Mexican and U.S. federal agents have made it harder for Mexican cartels to get drugs into the USA. As a result, more narcotics remain in Mexico where they are sold to local consumers, says Marcela López Cabrera, director of the Monte Fenix clinic in Mexico City, which trains drug counselors. The number of new patients at Mexican treatment centers has more than quadrupled since 2000. The health ministry has announced plans to build 300 new rehab centers, triple the current total, to deal with the overflow. "We used to be mainly a country of transit for drugs. Now we've become a consumer," says Ricardo Sánchez, director of research for the health ministry's rehab centers. Mexican President Felipe Calderón warned last month that cartels are no longer just trying to get drugs to the USA, but generate consumers "here in Mexico who will buy them, and buy them for the rest of their lives." http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-07-22-mexaddicts_N.htm In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced -- and of those, 90 percent -- 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover -- were found to have come from the U.S. But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes. In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. Resolved Question: Could you see yourself doing something like this?

Or at least..do you find this as humorous as I do? BEIJING (AP) - Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand - and pushed him off the ledge. Chen fell 26 feet (8 meters) onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion laid out by authorities and survived, suffering spine and elbow injuries, the official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday. The passer-by, 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng, had been fed up with what he called Chen's "selfish activity," Xinhua said. Traffic around the Haizhu bridge in the city of Guangzhou had been backed up for five hours and police had cordoned off the area. "I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals." Xinhua said Lai was "taken away by police" but did not elaborate. A police officer who answered the telephone Saturday at a station close to the bridge confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation. He refused to give any other details and hung up. According to Xinhua, Chen wanted to kill himself because he had accrued 2 million yuan ($290,000) in debt from a failed construction project. On Thursday, he made his way to the Haizhu bridge, where 11 other people have tried to take their lives since April. Lai volunteered to talk Chen down but was turned away by police, Xinhua said. Lai then broke through the cordon, climbed to where Chen sat, greeted him with a handshake, then pushed. Photos in the Beijing Morning Post showed Lai, shoeless and in a T-shirt, saluting after Chen fell. The paper said Lai was released on bail Friday but did not give any details. It said he had been on medication for "a mental illness" for decades and had been on his way to a hospital for his pills. Chen was recovering in the hospital, Xinhua said. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090523/D98C6GP80.html (it's just my bent sense of humor folks don't take it too seriously. i just thought the story was funny that's all) Yeah I thought the 'salute' was a great touch didn't you? Resolved Question: Would you dare push a would-be suicide jumper off a bridge because ?

you were angry at the jumper's "selfish activity"? CNN) -- A passerby pushed a would-be suicide jumper off a bridge in southern China because he was angry at the jumper's "selfish activity," Chinese media reported Saturday. It happened Thursday in the city of Guangzhou as Chen Fuchao threatened to jump off Haizhu Bridge, China's Xinhua news agency reported. The bridge has gained a "macabre" reputation with 11 jumpers having thrown themselves off the bridge since the start of April, Xinhua said. Traffic was held up for nearly five hours and a crowd gathered as Chen sat on the bridge, threatening to jump, Xinhua reported. Chen wanted to kill himself because he had 2 million yuan ($294,000) in debt after a failed construction project, Xinhua reported. Lian Jiansheng, 66, who was passing by the bridge, offered to talk Chen down, Xinhua said. Police refused, but Lian broke through the police cordon and climbed to where Chen was sitting. Lian greeted Chen with a handshake, then pushed him off the bridge, Xinhua said. Chen fell 26 feet (8 meters) onto a partially-inflated emergency air cushion, damaging his spine and elbow in the fall, Xinhua said. He is now recovering in a hospital. A photographer documented the sequence of events. The photographs show Lian, dressed in a T-shirt, shorts and socks, saluting to the crowd after pushing Chen off. "I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lian told Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals." Police took Lian away after the incident, Xinhua said. It did not say whether he would face any charges.  more

Resolved Question: Please could help me with my creative writing i have done this story and i was wondering if its ok ??? xx THX?

The traffic was at its busiest and the sun was high in the sky glistening as it touches the ground making it look like a brand new piece of glass. As Anita left her house she felt the hot sun hit her eyes and she had to cover them with both her hands. As she slowly removed her hands away from her face, her eyes quickly adjusted to the brightness and all she could see was the fountain over the road spewing water out like a fireman’s hose because the kids from across the street had broken it not a few days earlier. Anita stepped down from her door and turned slowly to face Barlow lane. Barlow lane was the busiest road in the whole of New York City, there were shops as far the as Anita’s slowly adjusting eyes (getting used to the sun still) could see, and buildings as old as New York itself. Anita walked for ages down Barlow lane and only stopped a few times to peer in a few shops and see what they were selling, but she didn’t buy anything because she didn’t have enough money for any of the stuff in the shops. She thought to herself that maybe on the way back she might buy a little something for that night, maybe a bottle of wine and some chocolates. But of course she didn’t know she wasn’t to return that night, or even never again. “Anita!!!” someone shouted from behind her, Anita turned quickly, to see that it was her friend from her old job (she worked as a primary school dinner lady before she worked at Twinkie & co). Barbara had long brown hair and wore the most hideous green jumpers you could imagine but of course Anita has always stayed in touch and close friends to her. “How have you been” Barbara said in her high pitched voice. “I am fine, you?” as she said that Barbara bust into tears on the very spot. “what’s the matter, WHATS THE MATTER!!!” shouted Anita and as she did, everybody’s head turned and people swarmed all around them, making a big fuss and as Anita tried her hardest to keep a hold of Barbara she couldn’t, the crowd were pulling her away so Anita left thinking shell be alright and so she set off. After a short while of walking Anita looked back, but there was no crowd, no Barbara, no fuss, she thought what’s going on so she pinched herself to check if she was not dreaming, she gave an “ouch” and she had no idea what had happened. Anita looked down at her watch and she saw that it was 10:50 and she had to be in work by 11:00 – she had already been late for work 4 times that week – so she decided to take a short cut down an old alley which she knew very well and walked down plenty of times on the way back home from work. Anita stepped into the alley slowly and put on her long, black coat so shield off the cold. The alley was dark and cold like a winters snowy night, and there were rats scurrying all about the place and the stench from the sewers was horrendous. As one of the rats scurried over Anita’s feet she jumped and screamed but didn’t run away. Anita walked on further into the alley, and the further she went in the darker it became. As Anita turned down one of the sharp corners, she saw that it was a dead end and she thought to herself that this was never here before and maybe she came down the wrong alley. As she turned around to go back to Barlow lane she was confronted with a wall, right in front of her which was as tall as the surrounding buildings and filled the whole alleys width, but that wasn’t there before, that’s just were she walked. As she walked down the alley her feet were making squelching and squishing sounds as she walked over small puddles of water which came from the broken pipes at either side of the alley. The rats were no-where to be seen. Anita looked quickly at her watch and it was 11:00 which means now she is late for work, so she hurried up her pace. Each step Anita took the lamppost that was in front of her started to get further and further away from her and the sky was turning a murky grey colour and becoming darker and darker. Anita turned around to look into the dark empty space that was behind and put her hands in her pockets because they were turning into ice. Then suddenly a very loud BANG came from behind her, which made her jump and turn around as quickly as she did before hand. She looked around to see if there was anyone or anything there that could have made the bang, but there was nothing there. Then suddenly a dark, tall and mysterious figure immerged from the dark in front of her. Anita shouted “Hello, who are you” but there was no answer. The only facial features Anita could make out were the bright blue eyes looking straight at her in a threatening way. After a short while, the tall figure made a sharp movement with his hands which made him look as though he was clapping violently but there was no clapping sound coming from his hands. His hands turned a violent blue colour which made the darkness into which Anita was staring into seem a bright blue colour. Anita shouted “What are you doing” but yet again there was  more

Resolved Question: Apply the "Giuliani technique" to nail the anti-social?

Rudy Giuliani focused NYC police attention on petty crime and found that, for instance, by stopping and interrogating turnstile-jumpers in the subway, it led to a significant decrease in much more serious criminality. Recently relocated form NYC to Miami, in both places we are constantly besieged by careening high-end vehicles who plow through crosswalks, and each day watch as "vacationers" throw rubbish everywhere in the streets and on the beaches. Why not implement the same technique and slap these people with substantial fines, focusing the police on these "minor" offenses as Giuliani did? They did so in Paris, imposing a $250 fine for littering and lo and behold the problem disappeared, AND the city streets became safer as well. And those idiotic after-market ghetto blaster car sound-systems and my pet peeve -- the downright criminal Ion-beam headlights that would suit airplanes and have no purpose in the city except aggression. Jeez -- intentionally BLINDING everybody! "Safety," they say. Baloney. EDIT: I'm not advocating a Singapore-style Police State, nor capital punishment as they regularly practice there. There is a balance. Tonight, after posting this, I walked my dog on Ocean Drive, south of Fifth where it;s quiet. From a black away, I was blinded by the Ion-neams of a car parked at the curb. As I approached, the passenger threw out an empty can. It was a BMW z4, with two Hispanic hotties inside, dressed to the nines. I paused, then asked quietly, "Those lights. Don't you know one day you may cause someone to get killed with those?" Sneer and shrug of the shoulders from the driver. "Don't you care about hurting others?", I went on, still quiet. Cool as can be, the answer came. "No." And with that she pulled out and they went on their way, leaving the trash behind. P.S. I'm no Giuliani supporter either. But though you might compare what I say in my question to those who said Mussolini "made the trains run on time", I think there's something to be done within the limits of preserving liberty first and short of transforming big cities into Disney theme-parks. They stopped that tendency quick enough in Paris, too. It just takes a concerned public and a little less polarized thinking. All law is not repressive, you know.  more

Resolved Question: Cricket Jumpers On Girls?

I recently brought a cricket jumper in the style that Diana Vickers of the X factor wore last year. I thought it looked really cute and quirky and I know no other girls that have them. Only today I was out in my local city center and a chavvy type boy shouted after me "Why would you wear a cricket jumper?" and it made me wonder if cricket jumpers look stupid on girls? Please help me out with your opinions Thanks :) x  more

Resolved Question: Why can't people accept rational hometown sports fans?

I'm from Boston, and yes, I know, we have a very bad reputation among other cities as fans, as sunny weather, whiny when we lose, obnoxious when we win biotches. And some of that is deserved, I mean, some of the people I hang out with are just... sad with it. But I consider myself a rational fan, in this instance, the Celtics. First of all, I'm 19, and I'm not storied in the Celtics lore of past glory, besides all the clips they show (usually in excess) about the franchise; however, I'm not a fair weather fan that jumped on the bandwagon when the Celts got KG and Ray Allen. I suffered through struggles with Antoine, when we had Gerald Green, Telfair, Delonte West, I remember when we had Al Jefferson. I remember falling in love with Powe when he was a rook. I also remember thinking that Rondo wasn't going to be too great of a point guard. My problem is that rational sports fans like myself are usually get a lot of shit. When I think one of our stars has done something wrong, I say it, and usually I get bashed over it. Like yesterday's Game 6 between the Bulls and Celts. I thought Rondo should have been tossed yesterday, and when I I put it on my facebook, I got a 'f*** you' almost immediately. I mean, he threw an elbow! Whether it connected or not to me that's a no-no, and I'll be damn surprised if he doesn't get suspended for Game 7. I can't stand Paul Pierce when he whines (which is all the time). Just play the game and shut up. KG makes a living off of intimidating smaller guards. Ray disappears but amazingly shows up always when you need him too. Perk starts the game in foul trouble, and also complains a lot, although that has gotten better this year. Our bench is nonexistent. Big Baby and Powe are too small for PF, although I'd take Powe over Big Baby any day (I'm assuming Davis gets the advantage cause he can shoot jumpers). Big Baby also needs to shave that... thing off his head, whatever it's supposed to be. Pruitt really needs to get his teeth fixed already, Mikki Moore starts the game in foul trouble also. Walker is still young so I'll give him another year. Marbury... wasn't a fan of that signing in the first place, and he hasn't justified the signing with his play either. I also will crack on any Pats and Sox players too ( I don't follow the Bruins, or hockey in general). I hate Julio Lugo, he was a wasted signing. If we could do the 04 off season all over again, I'd beg Epstein to grab Orlando Cabrera over Edgar Renturia, I never liked Coco Crisp, Mike Lowell is done after this season (most likely), and 'Tek needs to hang the cleats up. Maroney is a bust, Harrison is done, Bruschi needs to get off the field already, why the hell did Bill trade Hobbs (I remember his rookie season, and despite that awful mistake against Denver in the playoffs, I remember thinking he'd be a great player for us, I'm still lukewarm on what happened with Samuel, but of all the people on charge of our sports teams, I probably trust Belichick the most. And I do know and agree that people should blast us for Spygate. That was wrong and left a really bad taste in my mouth that I'm still trying to get out. Anyways... I said all that, but I really just want to ask, why can't a hometown sports team fan be (relatively) unbiased? I would like to express my opinion in a non homerish way. I don't wanna be like Tommy Heinsohn.  more

Resolved Question: What can you do about climate change..?

There are many easy cost-effective ways to reduce greenhouse emissions and save money as well: • Switch over to energy-efficient light bulbs • Use less heating in winter and simply wear a jumper • Open windows in summer and only use less air conditioning on very hot days • Use a clothes line for drying clothes and avoid using clothes dryers where possible • Move to a smaller house or unit (inner city, high rise unit dwellers typically use far less energy) • Pay bills and conduct business online as much as possible • If your old hot water system feels warm to the touch, wrap it in a thermal blanket • Say 'no' to plastic bags when shopping and take your own reusable ones • Use natural composts in your garden - store-bought fertilizers release more greenhouse gases. *Use Bicycle, not a car.  more

Resolved Question: Magic Tequila Joke..........?

A guy sits at a bar in a skyscraper restaurant high above the city. He slams a shot of tequila, goes over to the window and jumps out. The guy sitting next to him can't believe what he just saw. He's more surprised when, 10 minutes later, the same guy walks back into the bar and sits down next to him. The astonished onlooker asks, "How did you do that? I just saw you jump out of the window, and we're hundreds of feet above the ground!" The jumper responds by slurring, "Well, I don't get it either. I slam a shot of tequila, and when I jump out the window, the tequila makes me slow down right before I hit the ground. Watch." He takes a shot, and goes to the window and jumps out. The other guy runs to the window and watches as the guy falls to jut above the sidewalk, slows down and lands softly on his feet. A few minutes later the jumper walks back into the bar. The other guy has to try it, too, so he orders a shot of tequila. He slams it and jumps out the window. As he reaches the bottom, he doesn't slow down at all. SPLAT! The first guy orders another shot of tequila. The bartender shakes his head. "You're really an a**hole when you're drunk Superman." Bahaha!  more

Resolved Question: URGENT! One of my cats knocked over the mouse cage! (oh the irony)?

I don't know when exactly it happened, but it happened less than 24 hours ago. I just got home to find one that one of my cats had tipped over the mouse cage. There were 4 mice in this cage. There is one mouse behind the television that I can't get to, and one that I already found (or 2 of my 4 cats found in a shoe lol). So only one is back in the cage. I know exactly which cat did this, and even though it is in a felines nature to do such a thing I feel like ringing her little neck. Let's just say this is not the first time something like this has happened, and it won't happen again as she is for sure going to a new home this time. She's destroyed WAY too many things in this house- all my cats are rescues and she came with too much baggage and unpleasantness, definitely not made for "city-living". But anyhoo, back to the mice. What should I do? I have 3 mice loose in my home, and it just FREAKS me out! It makes me not want to sleep in my house at ALL! The thought of them climbing (and pooping) on me makes my skin crawl. Or, should I just let nature take its course and let my cats take care of them, as horrific as that sounds? Are there any tips that anyone has to take care of this situation or at least put my mind at ease? Just to clarify some points: I did not buy the mice, I took them in for a friend that went into the hospital. And they were in a spot that, I thought, was unreachable. And I know this cat- she's a good jumper, she gets around very very well. And when she goes to her new home she will either go to a rescue that I've fostered for before that will do good by her, or I will approve of a home for her on my own. I'm not giving her up just because of this one instance, it's a series of instances that have just become too pricey for me. 2 sets of new furniture, a new mattress, destroying everything she can, it's just all a bit too much for me. And we don't need to worry about the mice reproducing- we're 100% sure that they're all females, and none of them are pregnant. Does anyone else find this situation extremely ironic or what?!  more

Voting Question: Physics Homework, Need help ASAP.?

1. Sporting events are sometimes held at high altitudes, such as the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. The thinner air poses challenges for some athletes, but pole-vaulters, and also long-jumpers and high-jumpers tend to benefit, why? 2. Pole-vaulting began as an inventive way to get across rivers and other barriers. The first poles were made of bamboo. Today's poles are much more sophisticated. What principles need to be considered when designing a pole? Also Im in a grade 11 class, so I cant sound like a physicist :P. Also, How could you calculate the power generated by a pole-vaulter? Explain.  more

Voting Question: Is this a good portion of my story?

Evanescent rays of light indicate sunset. 7:30 on a beautiful April day. April 1st was ruined as was, June 22nd, '84. The day I was born. May 24th, '97, the day a nice park was reduced to smoldering rubble. July 4th, '03, the day that the fireworks set to go off on top of memorial hill were rigged into bombs. March 29th, '09, today, a chain reaction of explosions and fire. Hundreds of people killed on the Golden Gate Bridge, which is now in pieces, sinking to the bottom of the San Fransisco Bay. Cars and people die. A suicidal jumper is accidentally killed. I, Jeffersan Montgomery was a mile away from it. Getting ready to cross it for the first time in my life. An hour ago I was getting off an airplane that I first got on in a small town in New Jersey. My '92 washed up Saturn halted in front of the scene. Families were huddled around crying. Officers crying also, as the other officers were investigating. My puzzled mind stared at the crime scene, the first I have seen since a thirty-pound underweight midget tried to rob the local convenient store in Sansville (my home town). I pulled myself out of the small automobile and worked up the courage to ask somebody (in my best city accent), "What happened?" A man hurtfully answered as he pounded me with his shoulder, "What do you think happened idiot." I took the comment as well as I could then looked back at the water. A knot appeared in my throat as I tried to hold back tears. I didn't know these people, but it was sad. It was very sad. My eyes forced me to glance at the other crying people although I didn't want to. The most well-known bridge in America has been destroyed, many people dead, and many more hearts broken. I only wonder who would do such a horrid thing. My mind will have to wonder a little while longer. BTW: I'm only twelve. This isn't my worst work, but it's not my best.  more

Resolved Question: Is this good writing for a 7th grader?

The Abyss I used to enjoy sitting on the edge of the abyss. I dangled my feet over the edge, sometimes remembering just how much space separated my feet from the rock bottom. A twinge of fear would race through my chest and tickle my heart. It pumped with glee over all the excitement. I liked watching people as they jumped in. I liked to think of just how intense the sickness and overwhelming the despair in these people must be to cast aside all rational thought and let their bodies collapse under the pressure, like Atlas if he decided he'd had enough of this business of holding up the sky, letting it crush him and finally getting some sleep. This too tickled, and I laughed. The abyss measured a half a mile in diameter. Who knew how deep it was. You couldn't see the bottom. It was too far down for sunlight to reach. But I knew there were rocks. That's what everyone said, anyway—everyone who managed to climb back out. I never saw most who went in ever again. They either died in the fall or continue to wander aimlessly on the rock bottom, neck-deep in dark. And of those who made it out, most jumped back in. The jumpers were always being chased by something. Kings, presidents, city officials, congressmen, religious leaders, taxes, debts, law, morality, and death were common. Occasionally I saw someone chased over by their families. Mostly in-laws and children in those instances; other times, divorce. These things followed closely and disappeared when the person jumped. When I first came here, I tried to stop some from jumping. They were too damned determined to hit rock bottom, and raced past me. I almost fell in once myself, and decided from that point there was nothing to be done of it, and watched the joke of it all instead. I don't remember how long I sat there, watching, laughing. Now that I think of it, the whole thing was rather monotonous. Though not long ago, things started to change. I first noticed it when I saw a man and woman dive into the abyss, obviously married—they held hands as they jumped—chased by their daughter. She couldn't have been more than ten years old, blond hair. Her face was innocent, but looks are deceiving. The girl stopped at the edge as these things often do, and peered over. She didn't disappear, so I called to her. “Mommy and Daddy jumped into that hole,” she said. “I know,” I told her, and motioned for her to sit next to me. I asked her what had happened and she said they were having a fight and wanted a divorce. I supposed they were being chased by each other and didn't know it, thinking they were being chased by whatever they were having a fight about, and this girl followed them here. She told me about their problems, which weren't unusual, and asked me if they'd be coming back. I said most people don't. I should have lied. I told her about how people were chased into the abyss by kings, presidents, city officials, congressmen, religious leaders, taxes, debts, law, morality, and death. Sometimes they were chased by their families; mostly in-laws and children, sometimes divorce. She looked up at me, then back into the abyss. I told her that you couldn't stop someone who was going to jump in because they were damned determined to do so and she dove. No warning. No time to protest. She was simply gone, and damned determined about it. And I was alone again. Alone to watch as people jumped. I tried laughing, but I couldn't muster the breath. I watched in silence. Middle-aged people, then young people, then children. The things they were chased by became more trivial too. Bankruptcy turned into student loans, divorce into high-school breakups, government into anyone with the slightest control over what people do. And then there was nothing chasing them, they just came and jumped. The abyss became so crowded with jumpers, they didn't have room to be chased. A line formed, and people waited patiently for their turn, as if jumping into the abyss were somehow the most natural thing in the world, as if they'd been bred and raised to do it. And then the line got smaller, and smaller, until there was no line. There was nobody left to go in, and nobody came out. Rock bottom—home to the whole human race. Fuck it.  more

Resolved Question: What to pack for my trip to New York? Help needed!?

Hey, I'm going to New York in two weeks time, and i'll be staying there for a week. I'm traveling there from England with my school. I know it's going to be very cold, but I have no idea what clothes to take with me. I've brought jumpers and new coats/scarves etc. Is there anything you think is essential for me to take? Also, i'm going to be walking for hours around the city, so what shoes do you think I should take? Things like UGG's will get ruined if it snows won't they? So yeah; all you New Yorkers, what do you wear on a day-to-day basis? Thanks in advance!  more

Resolved Question: I want to start a horse business, but where?

I am in college and I want to start a horse business when I get out but I don't know where. I currently live in the North east (US). I am a hunter/jumper rider and I want to live near A rated shows but I don't want to live in the middle of no where or in a big city. I would like a smallish quaint pretty town. I don't want freezing winters where it is in the negatives every day and I don't want crazy hot summers where is 100 degrees. Does anyone have ideas?  more
