Resolved Question: Can you help with questions about a rotary hammer drill?

I have a decorative cinder block, the kind with drainage holes built in. I need to widen some of those holes to get a drainage pipe through. People have said that I need to use a rotary hammer drill to do this. I've looked at them at the home improvement stores and they are a little intimidating. Are they hard to operate? Are they like mini jackhammers? Do you have much over what you're drilling/chiseling? Is there an alternative tool I could use? I don't have to widen the hole too much, probably 1/2 inch max. The block is about 4 1/2 inches wide. More about the block size. It's the standard length (16 inches?), but is only 4 1/2 wide or deep.  more

Resolved Question: I want to mount a rotary clothes line onto a brick wall?

I've bought the line but I am concerned that I will not drill the holes in the wall straight. How can I make sure that I do this correctly. Don't let this put you off but I'm female LOL but I have done a fair bit of DIY The dryer is a Brabanta Wallfix 25 and is specially made for wall mounting. It includes all the fixtures and fittings, so I just have to pick up the courage to press the drill!!  more

Resolved Question: What specific type of epoxy should I use to bond cured concrete to steel plate?

I need to bond a 1" thick 6 square foot steel plate to a cured indoor concrete floor. What specific epoxy (chemical, or even specific brand, model, etc.) should I use for maximum permanent adhesion? Also, can a percussion (hammer) drill successfully drill a 1" hole in cured concrete? Or do I have to use a rotary hammer? If the latter, will the hole be as neat and tidy?  more

Voting Question: Dremel drill bits 628 don't fit Dremel?

This is for jewelry-making (with polymer clay). I have one Dremel (The 4.8V Cordless) and an older competitor product, the Black & Decker Wizard Rotary Tool. They're almost identical and the different attachments seem to fit each other. The other day I bought a Dremel 628 7-Piece Precision Drill Set. But they don't fit -- they're too thin. Neither tool tightens down far enough, including the actual Dremel. Is there some other attachment I need? (Maybe I'm missing something totally obvious?) I can't find any help online anywhere. People say they just work. Here's the drill bit set: http://www.dremel.com/en-us/AttachmentsAndAccessories/Pages/AttachmentsDetail.aspx?pid=628-01 To "Freedom Rocks" -- Thanks! That's probably the problem. I forgot that awhile back my wife told me she had put some of the parts in a baggie somewhere (along with the instructions...). And that's probably where I can find the chucks that I wasn't aware of.  more

Resolved Question: Is there a rotary or cutting attachment for a cordless drill?

I like to craft and use cardstock, posterboard, and styrene very often. I've grown tired of cutting by hand and have a small cordless drill. Is there any kind of attachment I can buy to use for cutting very very thin things? (3mm is my thickest) I'd hate to go and spend $40 and up on a whole new tool. No one in my area on craigslist has a dremel or rotary-type tool, so I was hoping there was a cheaper option new in the stores. Thanks for the help! Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Which Dremel rotary tool should I get?

I'm having trouble deciding which tool to get. Most have their obvious pros and cons, but there are some deciding factors that I need to find out. I'm building guitar effect pedals again, and am gonna make some mods to my amp, so I need something that can handle drilling wood, aluminum, and ABS, as well as sanding, buffing - all that standard stuff. I'm also willing to buy 'generic' brand (non-Dremel) stuff, but only under high recommendation. My top choice, based on my budget, is the 7.2v cordless Multipro, but I've heard (from only ONE review) that the battery is only 20 mins or so and takes 3 hours to charge, and I don't want to have to buy an extra battery pack. I'd like to know if this is true or untrue. If this is untrue, then I think my problem is solved. Second choice is the 100 Series or the Single-Speed Multipro. They both seem pretty similar. I'm worried that the cord won't be long enough or will get in the way, and that the single speed (35000 RPM) may be too much for some applications (ie. drilling ABS). Will the single-speed factor be a problem for my applications? Third choice is the 300 series or the variable speed Multipro. Same cord problem as the single speed models, but I would also have to buy this one used. What is the reliability of these tools, and should I worry about not having a warranty if I buy used?  more

Resolved Question: Republicans, how is "Drill baby drill" going?

I just wondered because with oil breaking new lows at 49 dollars a barrel, I cannot imagine too many oil companies are in too big of a hurry to lease deep water drilling ships at 600 grand a day to drill wells that might produce oil for a year or two if they are lucky. In fact, when I check righ counts, they were up 40% year over year, but in the last week about 6% of them have been shut down offshore, and I see oil companies are starting to shut down the onland rotary rigs to a lesser extent (just 0.6% so far). If oil goes to 30 bucks a barrel, you won't see much drilling at all in North America.  more

Resolved Question: does a power tool exist that would help me scrape adhesive off a wooden floor?

i don't want to risk using a big floor scraper and chewing it up, and i'd rather have something hand-held. i have found hammer/rotary drills and chipping hammers, but i don't want to shell out big bucks for these if they will be ineffective and completely wrong for the job. it is extremely old, thick black adhesive that was used to glue down a linoleum floor. there is also a layer of cardboard backer board on top that needs to be scraped off before we can even get to the adhesive. it is EXTREMELY difficult to scrape off and extremely time consuming. to do this to an entire room's floor would take weeks.  more

Resolved Question: Hitachi !8v Lithium Ion combi drill owners?

Do you sneer at the hoi poloi with their puny Ni Cad driven rotary water pistols. I just helped some nice Irish Elvis impersonators unscrew the hinges off of the house over the road and thus prevented them having to cause extensive damage by using crowbars to break and enter. I even used the integral torch to help them load up their Transit van with all the valuables. When I got home I still had plenty of charge left in the Lithium Ion 3amp per hour battery and so I dismantled my dialysis machine and made a crystal radio set.  more

Im installing a new kitchen faucet. I have disconnected all hoses and the sprayer from the kitchen sink. I have disconnected the handles and stem. My problem is Im not sure how to remove the two washers directly under the sink handles for cold and hot. Once I get them off I should be able to remove the remaining locking nut on each side. Any suggestions to get these rusted pesky washers off? I have the following tools at my disposal: Basin Wrench Pliers Screwdrivers Drill Dremel Rotary Tool Small Chisel Hammer Mallet (Metal and rubber) plus pretty much any other basic tools. Any help much appreciated. Oh yeah, I meant to say the washers are in the cabinet area of sink, directly under the handles. I believe it's considered a bottom mount faucet.  more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know where I can find a drill bit that acts as a clamp?

I am trying to wrap an object with wire. It will be much faster if I had a drill bit or other rotary device that can hold the object that I am trying wrap. I would hold the wire and just let the object spin instead of my hand spinning around the object! I forgot to mention, the item that the clamp needs to hold is a flat piece and cannot be drilled trough. I need the bit to hold this flat piece (about 1/8" wide) and spin it.  more

Resolved Question: Can I drill a hole in a stone with an SDS rotary hammer drill?

I want to drill a hole, maybe 3/4" or less and two or two and a half inches long, into a loose stone, probably under four inches thick and one foot in diameter. I am told than an SDS rotary hammer drill with a carbide tip is the way to drill a hole into rock, but I have no idea how this device works and with a name like "rotary hammer" it makes me wonder whether I could safely and effectively use it on a small stone in a vise (as opposed to a mammoth, immobile rock). Does this device work like a jackhammer or is it primarily rotary motion?  more
