Resolved Question: Whats your opinion on this chat I had with a Psychologist?

Hi there, I'll keep this brief so I don't bore you! For the last 6 months I have been seeing an Occupational Therapist for Anxiety, Depression and mild Body Dismorphic Disorder. Over the course of our sessions, she has decided that either Psychology or Psycho-Therapy would benefit me more, which I'm cool with, willing to try anything that might help! I am still seeing OT in the meantime but she referred me initially for an appointment with a Clinical Psychologist who was gonna chat to me, and decide whether Psycho-Therapy or Psychology was the right option. I went to see this woman on tuesday and it was so peculiar. She asked me a lot of questions about how I feel day to day, my relationships with family/friends etc, all of which I expected. Out of the blue she said "do you eat"? I said yes and explained that I went through a relatively short phase of trying the 2-4-6-8 diet that majorly restricts calories, had a few episodes of binge/purge and had mis-used laxatives for a period of about 4 months. I am still careful with calories but I don't restrict the amount, just eat healthy stuff and plenty of it! I don't look particularly thin or unhealthy either. After such a brief conversation, she decided she could "call me EDNOS" - eating disorder not otherwise specified?? I was astounded, my OT knew about my diet habits and had never mentioned the possibility of an eating disorder in any shape or form, she put it down to poor body image from BDD. Has anyone else had an experience like this at all? And anyone who has/had any form of an eating disorder, I'd really appreciate your feedback and opinion on this. May seem silly but I genuinely don't think I can be classified as having an eating issue, I accept all the other problems but not this one!! Thanks  more

OK so I am currently having Psychology sessions for my Anxiety Disorder and Agoraphobia as I am just so fed up with being so housebound and panic attacks all of the time that I am desperate too get myself better again.I have had this since I was really young and been on meds but they didn't do anything good for me so I am trying CBT sessions and am finding it all too much, I just want too get better and live my life. How can I make these sessions work better for me and get totally well from having these sessions??  more

because im to old or to disadvantaged ? im nearly 31 have a personality disorder and ptsd symptoms, suffered a woefully misfortunate life so far , missed out on qualifications, forming friendships , being employed , living a life, forming relationships etc . im starting from scratch, i own nothing except a computer , i live in a one bedroom flat on disability , im chasing therapy , one on one psychology which is not available in my area due to lack of resources , so they put forth a drop in centre where they do activities to help me integrate with ' humanity ' better. i suffer With agoraphobia, low self esteem at times, rage and aggression, high anxiety, persecutors paranoia , racing thoughts - even though ive managed well for years and improved with a lot of it.. i have a criminal past 7 years ago, a psychiatric record, obviously, been in a mental institution, 8 years ago. my big ambition in life is to have a fully independent life, a decent paid job in computers , to move abroad and leave britain , maybe ; austria, spain or germany. i have an injured ankle which will take time to heal, torn tendons due to a sprain a year ago. im out of shape and physically weak, have physical imperfections ; 2 missing teeth, a crooked little finger due to an injury years ago, injured nerves in my right knuckle because i punched a stone wall years ago.. i go out there when im brave enough to get my groceries, pay bills, and i see people living happy , carefree , fulfilling lives full of richness. i see it on tv , on myspace. in the present i still get that aloof, standoffish vibe from people in the community , and sometimes the only ones who show kindness , frienliness are the type i feel feel sorry for me and are giving me the message im a charity case , so theyll accept me on those basis. then im normally aloof back, and reject them, sending the message, they are not wanted in my life. then i leave. i feel stuck here, far away from my goals in life of a decent job in computers of moving abroad , leaving england living in germany or austria, a quiet village, a secure , stable life, financially ok etc. im so far away its severly depressing me. i honestly feel to far away from those goals, to disadvantaged, to stigmatised. like it will take up until im very old to achieve them.. i wish there was a quick fix so i could just leave this unwanted scenario..  more

just to say i have experienced rejection alot in my life, aloofness, stand-offishness by the local community, people coming into my life because i feel they feel sorry for me, accepting me as some charity case.. which in turn ive only rejected them anyhow, and spoke down to them made them feel like trash , just like the way they try to make me feel. im nearly 31 have a personality disorder and ptsd symptoms, suffered a woefully misfortunate life so far , missed out on qualifications, forming friendships , being employed , living a life, forming relationships etc . im starting from scratch, i own nothing except a computer , i live in a one bedroom flat on disability , im chasing therapy , one on one psychology which is not available in my area due to lack of resources , so they put forth a drop in centre where they do activities to help me integrate with ' humanity ' better. i suffer With agoraphobia, low self esteem at times, rage and aggression, high anxiety, persecutors paranoia , racing thoughts - even though ive managed well for years and improved with a lot of it.. i have a criminal past 7 years ago, a psychiatric record, obviously, been in a mental institution, 8 years ago. my big ambition in life is to have a fully independent life, a decent paid job in computers , to move abroad and leave britain , maybe ; austria, spain or germany. i have an injured ankle which will take time to heal, torn tendons due to a sprain a year ago. im out of shape and physically weak, have physical imperfections ; 2 missing teeth, a crooked little finger due to an injury years ago, injured nerves in my right knuckle because i punched a stone wall years ago.. i go out there when im brave enough to get my groceries, pay bills, and i see people living happy , carefree , fulfilling lives full of richness. i see it on tv , on myspace. in the present i still get that aloof, standoffish vibe from people in the community , and sometimes the only ones who show kindness , frienliness are the type i feel feel sorry for me and are giving me the message im a charity case , so theyll accept me on those basis. then im normally aloof back, and reject them, sending the message, they are not wanted in my life. then i leave. in the present i still feel like ive gelt a lot in my life an estrangement from society, like im not accepted by people. i dont want you to comment on the details of my question specifically but only on the main question : what would / could you do if people didnt accept you ? what would your strategies be ? thanx , regards.  more

Resolved Question: Could I become a counsellor if I am prone to depression/anxiety myself?

I have suffered from anxiety and depressive episodes since I was 18, been on and off the meds, and am now back on them after a relapse. I am 23 and a graduate in Bsc Psychology and have never really known what I want to do as a career, until recently I started thinking as I am quite passionate about mental/emotional disorders as I suffer from them myself, maybe I could pursue a career in counselling and help others get back to being happy and stronger. My only real concern is whether I will be a strong enough person to cope with all the problems I will confront or if my anxiety will get the better of me and I will be dragged down too. I know I want to help others with similar problems to myself,but although this means I can feel great empathy towards others, I worry I might not be able to handle it, but then maybe if I have had proper counselling training I will?! I am so confused, I just don't know what to do....any advice, or anyone in the same situation as me please do help! cheers : )  more

Hi to all,im going to start a Social Phobia treatment with psychotherapy and drugs, (Anafranil 25mg and Geodon 60mg),as you know this mental disorder annuls you to interact with people. But i can't just stay at home and watch the world behind the window. My idea is maybe kind of contradictory but i think it can help me to earn some money and self-help for my Social Phobia. My "brilliant idea" is to get a Sales job, yes a Sales job, i think it maybe can help me learn to interact with people and get some social skills. I have a job interview tomorrow for a sales employee (bank products sales) here in my country, i had experience as a telemarketer also a degree in industrial engineering and some other jobs within the industry (i don't like it by the way so i don't want to continue practicing it, don't ask me why),for the near future i want to get a psychology degree, i want to help people with all kind of mental disorders (Mayor depression,OCD,Phobias etc),since my adolescence i've been suffering traumas,complexes,low self-steem,Mayor Depression, Anxiety and the Social Phobia, so i know how sad it can be.. I have a HUGE exam tomorrow and Im feeling really scared, its an A level Psychology one, although I feel like I know my stuff I cant stop panicing and feel like running away from it all together, I got through my GCSE's but this is way scarier, its 3 hours! This phobia often arises from a feeling of inadequacy that their bodies are physically inferior, particularly due to comparison with idealized images portrayed in the media. The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia, a word that is derived from the concatenation of the Greek words Παρασκευή, δεκατρείς, and φοβία, meaning Friday, thirteen, and phobia respectively; alternative spellings include paskevodekatriaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia, and is a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, a phobia (fear) of the number thirteen. 8. Panphobia - Fear of Everything Panphobia, also called omniphobia, Pantophobia or Panophobia, is a medical condition known as a “non-specific fear”; the sufferer finds themselves in a state of fear but with no known target, and therefore no easy remedy. It has been described as “a vague and persistent dread of some unknown evil”. This fear is often seen as a secondary condition to schizophrenia. 9. Taphophobia - Fear of being Buried Alive Fear of being buried alive is the fear of being placed in a grave while still alive as a result of being incorrectly pronounced dead. The abnormal, psychopathological version of this fear is referred to as taphophobia. Before the advent of modern medicine the fear was not entirely irrational. Throughout history there have been numerous cases of people being accidentally buried alive. 10. Pteronophobia - Fear of being Tickled by Feathers Pteronophobia is the irrational fear of being tickled by feathers. Certain childhood events, such as tickling a baby, can lead to this fear as the child may feel trapped. It is related to the fear of tickling. Bonus: Luposlipaphobia The fear of being pursued by timber wolves around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a newly-waxed floor. This is actually a fictional phobia which was created by Gary Larson - author of the Far Side comics. I was reading about phobias and I found it very interesting, I was surprised to find so many people suffer with this debilitating illness. I have recently completed a degree in Psychology at the University of Westminster in which I gained a 2:1 with honours. During my final year my chosen modules included Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology whereby I covered Eating Disorders in both modules. As a result, I feel I have a good grounding with regards to theoretical knowledge of Eating Disorders. I also undertook the Literature Review module in which I reviewed the clinical effectiveness, and cost effectiveness of Computerised Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy among those with Depression and/or Anxiety Disorders, thus giving me a broad knowledge of computerised self-help programs. Additionally, my final year dissertation involved investigating body image satisfaction among a male population, looking at whether those who were involved with a romantic partner were more satisfied with their body image than those who were single. Carrying out these projects was a great learning opportunity for me, and something that I enjoyed immensely and for which I gave me a great deal of satisfaction once complete. It gave me a great deal of confidence in carrying out my own research on a larger scale than I had done in my previous 2 years at university. I feel I would be a suitable candidate for this position as I possess good knowledge and understanding of various experimental designs, and statistical analyses. Whilst at university I would often assist fellow students in helping them grasp an understanding of research methods. I am a warm, friendly individual who can work effectively and with initiative, not only on my own, but also as part of a team. I am an extremely hardworking and organised person with the ability to work to strict deadlines whilst still maintaining composure. Not only that, but my ability to adapt to new situations and my keenness to take on new challenges allows me to quickly learn and fit in to a new environment with ease. I have previously worked in the field of mental illness whereby I worked as a drop-in centre volunteer for Mind in Enfield. I enjoyed this role very much: I found it very rewarding and it gave me the experience and confidence in dealing with people with various mental health problems. I would love to be given the opportunity to work as a research assistant as my future career plans involve going on to study for a Masters and then a PhD in the area of Health psychology. Resolved Question: Advice on anxiety /phobic disorders?

I developed an anxiety/phobic disorder a year & a half ago. Had counselling for 16 wks & medication for panic attacks. I found that CBT improved the situation but hasn't resolved it. I am now seeking long term counselling to continue making progress and have also read several books on counselling and am studying psychology at university. I'm still nowhere near back to being my normal self although I am able to function a bit better day to day. It's very scary and my life is extremely limited. Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so have you fully recovered or is this something that I will have to 'manage' for the rest of my life? If you have had a similar experience, you have my sympathy and I wish you luck in trying to combat it.  more

I live in an area wereby resources are low and therefore get the feeling the treatment I am recieving is just not ideal for my kind of disorder and more suited to depression and anxiety patients who would otherwise be reclusive and housebound which I am not. I have been attending a day hospital pshychiatric unit for five months, 4 days a week and once a week psychology counciling. The councelling is good but the rest I find dimeening and barely stretches the brain beyond kindergarten levels! It tends to be activities which are supposed to be 'distraction', but I somehow do not find it all direct /intensive enough. I was on medication but can no longer take as I am pregnant. I am desperate for recovery! To Dickie-What does Euthenasia mean? Is that suicide? Did you not read my question, It is not depresion I suffer.
